Climate action embedded in Australian Retailers Association’s DNA

We love associations showing strong leadership on climate action. It provides examples for others to follow and initiatives to emulate. Australia’s largest peak retail group, the Australian Retailers Association, is very much one to follow.
ARA has demonstrated commitment to leading the retail sector in its transition to net zero emissions by 2050. The Association calls on the retail sector to take ambitious climate action to achieve this goal.

ARA has been working proactively to unite the local retail community behind a common vision for change while also collaborating with global thought leaders as the second retail association to sign the UN-backed Race to Zero Accelerator Pledge.

Helping 1000s of small businesses
ARA wants to ‘help resource-constrained small businesses to define and reach their sustainability objectives faster’, says CEO Paul Zahra and has partnered with Greener to provide digital resources that ‘help small businesses to understand and prioritise the steps they can take to reduce their carbon footprint.
ARA has created resources that provide small businesses with personalised pathways and simple steps they can take to become a greener and more sustainable. Greener co-founder, Tom Ferrier, explained that it ‘fills the gap between motivation and know-how’ by helping small business build ‘a personalised pathway to Net-Zero… and rewards positive changes with consumer-facing trust marks’.
Influencing beyond the retail sector

ARA’s Climate Action Plan sets out a holistic vision for change. It supports retailers in setting, meeting, and exceeding their own targets. But it goes beyond their own membership. The Association:

  • works to engage consumers on climate action
  • drives investment to accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy
  • works with others, including ‘partners’ along the retail supply chain and other sectors

This is an excellent example of associations using their influence with members, customers, peer groups and related sectors. The retail sector is well placed to capitalise on its position within supply chains and leverage its influence for extensive climate-wise flow on effects. The Race to Zero pledge includes reaching net-zero on Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions as soon as possible.
